Man killed on I-495 probably walking to Lowell

LAWRENCE - He quit drinking years ago, but Robert Paquin still liked to reminisce about the times he spent in the bars of his hometown of Lowell, friends said.

Sometimes the 63-year-old even walked all the way to Lowell from Lawrence just to see his old haunts again.

Friends believe that's what he was doing yesterday morning when he was struck by a car and killed as he was attempting to walk across Interstate 495 in Tewksbury.

"He's done that before," said Charlene Fredricks, the manager of the rooming house where Paquin lived in Lawrence. "He used to do that all the time."

Police say Paquin was trying to cross the northbound side of the highway near Exit 39 to Route 133, when he was hit by a 2001 Saab sedan at 6:20 a.m. The driver, William Szabo, 57, of Acton, was hospitalized for observation.
